@expo63 Well the effect is down to the scene itself but it also required a gif-maker with an eye for artsy details :)

This scene sort ot stands out, isn't it? It is not exactly funny but more reflective and works even better out of the film context. It caught my attention too - both in terms of James' close-up and its different aesthetic. You were faster than me ;) and I am glad. :) Also, I was not aware of the 'man at the window' trope at all :)

I wonder what the little dog is drinking? Vin santo?

He is playing a slight stereotype (absent-minded tea-drinking English aristo, also turns to be gay). But with the adorable dog and satin trousers this is hardly a complaint. And at least he’s not playing the masochistic Russian suitor. ;D

‘a dreamy, painting-like atmosphere...’: this is entirely down to the original shot, which caught my eye while I was searching for James in the satin trousers. ;) I like that the pan across the curtains to his face gazing out creates a sort of screenwipe effect.

Also, ‘the wo/man at the window’ trope. In period films, it’s conventionally a woman (confined in/by domestic space) who gazes out, so when it’s a man or queer character it gets more interesting. Also pertinent to Maurice, of course. :)
